The first movie in the category of horror comedy, Stree entered the ₹100 crore club just 18 days after its release. The movie, which was made on a budget of only ₹20 crores, impressed the audience with its unique storyline (inspired by a real-life incident), fine performances by the cast, and intelligent -almost introspective – humor.

2. The Kashmir Files
The Kashmir Files: Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files has been garnering applause and appreciation from everywhere for every right reason. And the magic of the movie can be seen in its Box-Office collection. Made with a budget of 25 crores rupees, the movie has earned 200 crores rupees at the box office.

3. Tanu Weds Manu
Starring Kangana Ranaut and Madhavan, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ was made on a total budget of Rs 15 crore. The movie recovered Rs 10 crore in the first week of its release. The romance drama directed by Anand L Rai went on to become an instant hit and the satellite rights of the film were sold for Rs 7.5 crore. Owing to its commercial success, the makers made a sequel to the movie titled ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ which went on to become a box-office success too

4. Badhaai Do
The comedy-drama Badhaai Ho, which had a budget of 30 crores and a gross of 132.65 crores, was another box office surprise. Intelligent dialogues and outstanding performances by the brilliant cast, particularly Gajraj Rao, Surekha Sikri, and Neena Gupta, added to the unusual plot.

5. kahani
Directed by Sujoy Gosh, ‘Kahani’ stars Vidya Balan in the lead role and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Bengali actor, Parambrata Chatterjee in pivotal roles. ‘Kahani’ is one of the best women-centric films made in recent times and also one of the most successful ones. The movie was made on a shoestring budget of Rs 8 crore and went on to rake Rs 78 crore at the box office. A sequel to the movie went on floors in March 2016 and will star Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal in lead roles.

6. Hindi Medium
Hindi Medium: The story of this Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar starrer comedy-drama was like a breath of fresh air in the midst of commercial potboilers with the same old plot. Made on a budget of ₹23 crores, the movie – that people found hilariously relatable – managed to earn a collection of almost ₹70 crores at the Box Office.

7. Taare Zameen Pa
Starring Aamir Khan and Darsheel Safary in lead roles, ‘Taare Zameen Par’ was made on a budget of Rs 12 crore. The movie went on to collect around Rs 89 crore and was declared a super hit. Directed by Aamir Khan, the movie went on to win the National Award for Best Film on Family Welfare. It also won Aamir Khan the Filmfare Award for Best Actor and Best Director. Child artiste Darsheel Safary won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.

Even though the film starred non-commercial performers and had a modest budget of 15 crores, Secret Superstar managed to gross 81.28 crores. In reality, the film’s emotionally resonant plot resonated with audiences all over the world, resulting in a worldwide gross of 121.59 crores

It’s no surprise that the film grossed a total of 22.80 crores in its lifetime.
