Napoleon, a highly anticipated film from Apple Studios, will follow a similar release strategy as Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. It will have an exclusive theatrical release starting on November 22, 2023, and Apple will collaborate with Sony Pictures Entertainment for the wide rollout in theaters. While the movie will eventually be available for streaming on Apple TV+, the streaming release date has not been announced yet. The film Napoleon will explore the life of Napoleon Bonaparte, highlighting his journey from humble beginnings to becoming an emperor.
“The story will focus on his complex and tumultuous relationship with his wife and true love, Josephine. Through this lens, the film will provide an original and intimate perspective on Napoleon’s rise and fall. It will showcase his renowned battles, unwavering ambition, and exceptional strategic thinking as a remarkable military leader and visionary.”

Initially known as Kitbag, the film’s title was later changed to Napoleon in January 2022.
Cast in Napoleon
Joaquin Phoenix, an Academy Award-winning actor, will cast the role of Napoleon Bonaparte in the film. This marks his first collaboration with director Ridley Scott in 23 years since their work together on Gladiator, which earned Phoenix his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Phoenix gained widespread acclaim and won his first Academy Award for Best Actor in 2020 for his role in Todd Phillips’ Joker. He recently completed filming the sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, where he will be joined by Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Phoenix has received previous Oscar nominations for his performances in Walk the Line and The Master. He also starred in Ari Aster’s black comedy Beau Is Afraid.

Vanessa Kirby, an Academy Award nominee, has been cast as Empress Joséphine, Napoleon’s wife. Initially, Jodie Comer from Scott’s The Last Duel was set to portray the role but had to leave due to scheduling conflicts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Kirby rose to fame for her portrayal of Princess Margaret in the first two seasons of The Crown, which earned her an Emmy nomination. She has showcased her versatility by transitioning between prestigious projects and Hollywood blockbusters, including standout performances in films like Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Kirby received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role in the drama Pieces of a Woman.
The cast of Napoleon also includes Tahar Rahim as Paul Barras, Ben Miles as Caulaincourt, Ludivine Sagnier as Theresa Cabarrus, Matthew Needham as Lucien Bonaparte, Youssef Kerkour as Marshal Davout, Phil Cornwell as Sanson ‘The Bourreau,’ Edouard Philipponnat as Tsar Alexander, Paul Rhys as Talleyrand, John Hollingworth cast as Marshal Ney, Gavin Spokes as Moulins, and Mark Bonnar as Jean-Andoche Junot. Rupert Everett and Ian McNeice are also part of the cast in undisclosed roles.
